Spiced Apple Skillet Cake

A comforting skillet‑baked apple cake where caramel‑touched apple slices lie beneath a soft, cinnamon‑spiced batter. The buttery, vanilla‑infused crumb develops a golden crust while staying tender inside, making it an ideal warm dessert for any season.

45 mins 1 batch of 8

Ingredients

  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 Egg
  • ½ cup Milk
  • ¼ cup + 3 ¼ tablespoons Unsalted Butter
  • ¾ cup Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Baking Powder
  • ⅓ cup Brown Sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon Salt
  • 2 Apples

Directions

  1. Mise en place: Core the apples and cut them into uniform chunks; gather butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, milk, egg, and vanilla.
  2. Turn the oven on to 350 °F and place a 10‑inch oven‑safe skillet inside to heat up while you prepare the other components.
  3. Pull the skillet out, melt the two tablespoons of butter over medium heat, then add the apple pieces, the one‑third cup of brown sugar and half a teaspoon of cinnamon; stir constantly for about four to five minutes until the fruit softens and takes on a glossy sheen, then spread the mixture evenly across the pan and set it aside.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine one cup of all‑purpose flour, three‑quarters cup of granulated sugar, the single baking powder, a quarter teaspoon of salt, and the remaining half‑teaspoon of cinnamon; whisk until the dry ingredients are uniformly mixed.
  5. In a second bowl, beat together half a cup of milk, one‑third cup of softened butter, the egg, and a teaspoon of vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and homogenous.
  6. Gently fold the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, mixing just enough to eliminate any flour pockets.
  7. Spoon the batter over the apple layer in the skillet, using a spatula to level the top without overworking the batter.
  8. Return the skillet to the oven and bake for 25‑30 minutes, or until the surface turns golden and a toothpick inserted in the center emerges clean.
  9. Let the cake rest in the skillet for ten minutes before cutting; serve warm, optionally accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
